Maximise Electric Motor Service Life with Proper Storage and Commissioning

Can the Way You Store Electric Motors Determine Its Service Life?

Absolutely. In fact, some motors begin deteriorating long before they are ever put into service.

It’s common for spare motors to spend months or even years in storage waiting for a breakdown or planned shutdown. Unfortunately, many fail prematurely because they are not stored correctly.

One of the biggest risks is moisture ingress. As ambient temperatures fluctuate, condensation can form inside the motor, allowing moisture to penetrate the insulation system. Over time, this reduces insulation resistance and accelerates insulation ageing.

To maximise service life, consider the following storage practices:

  • Keep space heaters energised whenever the motor is out of service to minimise condensation.
  • Rotate the shaft periodically (typically monthly) to redistribute bearing grease and help prevent false brinelling caused by vibration.
  • Store the motor in a clean, dry environment with stable temperature and humidity wherever possible.
  • Seal cable entries and inspection covers to prevent dust, moisture and insects from entering the machine.
  • Avoid storing motors directly on concrete floors or dirt where moisture can migrate.

Before returning a motor to service, don’t simply connect power and hope for the best. Carry out a commissioning inspection that includes full electrical and mechanical testing.

A spare motor should be viewed as an insurance policy, not a forgotten asset. Proper storage and commissioning can add years to its service life and significantly reduce the risk of an unexpected failure when it’s needed most.
